O'Brien's Tower: A Victorian Vision
At the highest point of the cliffs stands O'Brien's Tower, a round stone structure built in 1835 by local landlord Sir Cornelius O'Brien. A man ahead of his time, O'Brien believed in the power of tourism to lift the local economy. He built the tower as an observation point for the hundreds of Victorian tourists who were already flocking to see the dramatic coastline.
Today, your admission ticket includes access to the tower. From its rooftop viewing platform, on a clear day, you can see across to the Aran Islands in Galway Bay, the Twelve Pins and Maumturk mountains in Connemara, and south to Loop Head and the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry. It remains the best vantage point to appreciate the sheer scale and beauty of this iconic landscape.
